CWU’s GED program offers an alternative to a traditional school setting, providing young adults with the individual attention and supportive services they need to succeed. The full-time program’s holistic approach focuses equally on academics, support, and preparation for an economically self-sufficient future.
The no-cost GED program provides free transportation and free breakfast and lunch to students.
Academics
Students attend classes in mathematics, science, social studies, reading, and writing for a minimum of four hours a day. Working in small groups with experienced teachers, students receive individual attention and progress based on their comfort level. Local college students and community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring. The facility includes a 13-station computer lab with Internet access and self-directed GED software available to students.
Support
Many GED students face challenges such as homelessness, teen pregnancy, and negative school experiences. Case managers offer counseling, advocacy, referrals, and other assistance. A Student Leadership Committee and weekly Town Hall meetings empower students to advocate for themselves, make decisions, and participate as part of a community. Other support services include:
- Weekly life skills classes
- Weekly parenting groups
- Health education and counseling
- Leadership opportunities
Preparation for economic self-sufficiency
While students study for their GED, they also learn the skills they’ll need to lay the foundation for an economically secure future. Students participate in the following:
- Weekly workplace skills classes
- Career exploration activities
- Job placement assistance
- College and financial aid counseling
- Resume-writing and interview practice
- Follow-up services for one year
