The BOSTON YOUTH SERVICE NETWORK is a group of community-based organizations providing an integrated continuum of Alternative Education and Career Exploration programs for at-risk youth who have not found success in traditional systems. REFER A YOUTH.

 

Member organizations have a shared mission to improve the quality and diversity of services for youth so they develop the academic, work-readiness, life skills and support structure necessary to become productive adults.

BYSN Youth Showcase

Health Careers for Youth at Sociedad Latina collaborates with medical hospitals and health centers in the Boston area to provide youth with the opportunity to explore careers in the health care industry through paid internships at participating institutions.

Computer Tech "Bridge to College" Program in Dorchester

The BATEC program, in partnership with RCC, UMass Boston and DotWell, is offering a Bridge to Community College program focused on computer technology. Participants will receive college instruction and 6 credits upon completion, coaching in basic math and writing for entry-level college standards, and support with college admission. Students can apply the credits toward an IT for Business degree. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Flier attached.

BPS Community Forums on "Graduation for All"

The Boston Public Schools is partnering with local community-based organizations to sponsor a series of community forums targeting youth and their families affected by the dropout crisis. All BYSN members and partners are strongly encouraged to organize their youth and families to attend these forums. These voices are critically important and this is an opportunity to influence decisions and policies that impact our youth.

BYSN November Meeting - Working with Traumatized Youth Workshop

We are using the majority of our meeting time this month on a training in partnership with the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative, affiliated with Massachusetts Advocates for Children - Working with Traumatized Youth. This is an opportunity to bring all of our staff together from our various organizations so please invite any of your staff who would like to participate. We are meeting 2:00-4:00 pm at 555 Amory Street at the PIC Jamaica Plain office.

CWC Boston Networking Event

Commonwealth Workforce Coalition is sponsoring a neworking event in Boston to share professional information, learn about what is going on in the field and find out about programs and services that can assist you in your day-do-day work. The Boston Network meeting is appropriate for anyone working in employment, education or training with adults or youth. Thursday, November 29th from 10:00 AM - Noon at ABCD (178 Tremont Street). The event is free but registration is required.

Delta GEMS Mentoring Program for Girls (14-18 years)

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Boston Alumnae Chapter is pleased to announce the Delta G.E.M.S. mentoring program for young women between the ages of 14-18 for the 2007-2008 year. Eligible applicants must be in high school, fill out an application and submit a personal statement.

Workshop #2: Teaching 6th-12th Grade Level Equivalency LD Learners

Methods and materials will be presented that a teacher or volunteer tutor could use to teach decoding, spelling, writing and comprehension. Additional issues with ESOL LD learners will be considered. Participants are urged to bring case studies and pre-formulate questions to pose in the session.

DOE Conference: Strengthening the Implementation of Alternative Education

The Massachusetts Department of Education, in collaboration with the Pathways to Success by 21 (P21) initiative and the Commonwealth Corporation, is sponsoring an Alternative Education state conference on Monday, October 22, 2007 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The conference will include a variety of presentations on areas related to Alternative Education and presentations on a range of Alternative Education models. There is no fee for this conference.
