About Sociedad Latina: Since 1968, Sociedad Latina has been working in partnership with Latino youth to cultivate the next generation of leaders. With the support of families and the broader community, Sociedad Latina fulfills its critical mission by providing a broad array of programs that promote community leadership, civic engagement, meaningful employment, educational attainment, cultural identity and pride, and the continuation of traditions.

About the Health Educators in Acción Program: Sociedad Latina’s vision of social change is one that includes the youth who live in Roxbury and the surrounding neighborhoods, one that gives youth of color visibility and makes their voices heard, and one that gives them the tools to influence the changes that occur in their neighborhoods. Our Health Careers for Youth Program focuses on building the workforce development skills of youth ages 16-21 so that they are able to pursue career in the medical field, achieve their educational and workforce goals and while also identifying and decreasing health disparities that affect their communities. Youth are placed in hospitals two days a week to improve workforce development skills and explore careers in the medical field, and also receive workshops from local health institutions on medical topics.

Health Careers for Youth Responsibilities: Health Careers for Youth play a vital role in the success of Sociedad Latina. They serve as role models and outreach to their peers in the Roxbury community as young professionals. Health Careers are trained to become skilled professionals as well as agents of change in the health of their communities. Each Health Careers Youth reports to the program’s coordinator. Responsibilities and duties of Health Careers Youth are as follows:

• Ability to communicate effectively to peers, adults, and community leaders through both speaking and writing.
• Facilitate peer discussion/class groups and develop trainings on specific programmatic components.
• Facilitate program meetings/lead peer classes.
• Ability to conduct research and/or environmental scans in the community and schools.
• Ability to work with youth from different ethnic backgrounds, ages, and neighborhoods.
• Organize and participate in community activities, career panels and programmatic events.
• Attend internships in local hospitals and support with administrative and work force tasks.
• Ability to take a leadership role.
• Follow and maintain the values and vision of Sociedad Latina.
• Be creative and energetic.
• Be organized and project-oriented.
• Be able to work after 5 p.m. and some weekends.
• Uphold all the youth policies and rules of Sociedad Latina.

Health Educators: Health Educators should possess a desire to see and make positive change in their community and to pursue career and educational goals in the medical sector. They will enjoy working collaboratively with other youth and community organizations. They will have a drive to succeed in school and at work, serve as a leader to fellow youth, and be engaged in their own personal development.
