Mentor Resource Coordinator

The mission of the Commonwealth Corps is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in direct service to rebuild communities, address unmet community needs, and increase volunteerism. Commonwealth Corps members will serve up to twelve months in full-time or part-time capacities at designated nonprofits and public entities. What they have in common is a desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.

YouthBuild Boston is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening youth and rebuilding community. YBB accomplishes its goal through workforce development and completion of community service projects that engage young people ages 14 -24. Our programs educate out-of-school you in GED preparation and train unemployed youth in the landscaping and construction industries.

Position Overview:
Provide workforce development resources to youth ages 16-24 on skills assessment, job preparation, and interviewing skills. Provide on-going support and resources to program participants. Develop working relationships with student sponsors and mentors, businesses and local organizations within the community. Assist with securing job and internship opportunities for students transitioning into the workforce.

Position Overview:
Establish mentor matches for mentees 16 – 24 years of age for 15 month YBB mentoring program. Coordinate all aspects of volunteer participation in the program. Provide on-going support and resources to program participants.

Training, support and ongoing supervision will be provided.

Specific Responsibilities:
• In collaboration with Program Manager, Recruit, select, hire, and train mentors for YBB mentoring program
• Provide trainings and development opportunities for all participants
• The Corps member will facilitate bi-weekly meetings with mentors to assess
progress of development relations and to address any issues of concerns as they arise.
• Identify, implement and coordinate a variety of volunteer recruitment methods and strategies to ensure quality and appropriate mentor matches.
• Collaborate with the Resource Coordinator to organize regular activities and service opportunities for mentors and mentees on and individual level as well as activities for group settings.
• Provide monthly group activities with Program Director and other YBB mentors and mentees
• Participate in Community service projects with mentoring program participants, staff and students
• Attend on-going trainings to remain abreast of and to learn strategies and techniques to providing quality service and support to
. program participants.
• Skills assessment of trainees, match interests of trainee with potential employment opportunities
• Refine students soft and hard skills
• Strengthen current business relationships, build new relationships in community
• Assist in securing internship or job placement opportunities with local businesses
• Collaborate with GED teacher in developing “Life Skills” curriculum.
• Develop professional relationships with external constituents to provide on-site job readiness workshops to refine students soft & hard skills through workshops and external resources
• Assist students with researching educational opportunities
• Attend college/university tours to expose students to educational options
• Conduct outreach to local organizations in coordinating quest speaks and workshop facilitators

Must be 18 years old
• Must be a Massachusetts Resident
• Must have experience working with urban youth (high school)
• Must have experience working with urban youth (high school)
• Dependable (maintain excellent rate of attendance)
• Data entry experience and knowledge of Windows ’98, Microsoft Word, Access & Excel, Internet Technology
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Able to work independently and with team members must have GED or High School Diploma, and completed at least one year of post-secondary studies
