We provide a continuum of social, recreational, health, education, and family support services to children, teens, and adults in greater Boston. Through these programs, Federated is fulfilling its mission of increasing opportunities for personal growth and improved quality of life.

 

I.    JOB TITLE:          GED Teacher/Counselor

 

       REPORTS TO:          Federated’s Alternative Education Director

 

II.   POSITION OVERVIEW

 

Federated’s Log School Young Adult GED Program provides youth between 16-21 years of age GED and college preparation classes. The mission of the school is to guide and encourage youth to acquire the social, emotional, and academic skills necessary for academic and life success. The teacher/counselor’s role includes providing classroom instruction focused on the GED, SAT tests and college readiness for students who successfully complete program requirements; the teacher/counselor will also assist student deal with all barriers to a successful completion of the program including employment, health, counseling, family stabilization, etc.

 

III. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

·          Commit to Federated’s vision of empowering underprivileged communities through education.

·          The teacher is responsible for writing and implementing individualized lessons that integrate subject matter, skills area, learning styles and activities.

·          Document academic, social and emotional performance through assessment, counseling notes, observation and one to one meetings.

·          Demonstrate a proactive commitment to fostering sound moral and character development with our student population.

·          Establish a safe and positive classroom environment.

·          Comply with all City, State and Federal regulations and licensing requirements including 766, CORI and others as necessary.

·          Compile and submit schedules, reports, evaluations, curriculum, and other administrative paperwork in a timely manner

·          Track students’ absences and determine eligibility for additional support services

·          Meet individually with student to strategize with them concerning their career and academic goals.

·          Host on-going workshops with students on topics designed to prepare students for college or job training.

·          Attend professional development trainings and workshops at least twice per semester.

·          Participate in weekly team meetings, provide information and assistance when requested, and provide input on team agenda, program plans, and annual budgets

·          Act as liaison with relevant coalitions, advocacy groups, and funders such as BYSN, YTFG, and PIC and coordinate activities with Team Leader

  • Perform other tasks as assigned

IV.              Qualifications

 

·          Demonstrated success as an educator; experience working with an urban population and/or alternative education programs preferred

·          Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·          Highly organized and motivated, with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines

·          Ability to work cross functionally with a diverse staff and to support a diverse population of students

·          Commitment to the mission and vision of Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses and the potential of all young people to attain higher education.

·          Self-directed, enthusiastic, reliable, and creative, comfortable working as a team player to develop and enhance Federated’s alternative education programs

·          Demonstrated experience and knowledge of interdisciplinary curriculum

 

 

V.                 SALARY AND HOURS

    

Full time salaried position; salary commensurate with experience; benefits include health, dental, 401K
