Organizing Youth for CORI Reform
The Youth Need YOU! Come Together - Create a Plan - Take Action
Friday, Jan 25, 3:00-5:00 pm at Boston City Hall, Curly Room (5th Floor). The Governor's Executive Order for CORI Reform DOES NOT include any provisions for Juvenile offenders. It is critical that we organize a united youth front to push forward language regarding juvenile CORI in the Executive Order.
Lisa Thurau-Gray of the Juvenile Justice Center at Suffolk Law School states:
Juvenile records are released to housing authorities, private enterprises—from banks to fast food restaurants, hospitals (sometimes 12 years later), day care centers, and to the summer youth employment programs. Youth with records are denied entry to a [wide array] of training programs—just by dint of having a record.
Even juvenile records which disclose a youth's case has been dismissed or the youth has been acquitted are used to justify not hiring youth. The release of this information to employers represents the trumping of the arrest information over the disposition of the juvenile judge—an employer sees the charge and assumes there is danger. This dissemination of data [makes defective] the whole point of the court proceeding by making the fact of the arrest the most salient piece of information.
This Needs to stop, the youth need YOU to take action and help create a plan for them to take action!
