Delta GEMS Mentoring Program for Girls (14-18 years)

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Boston Alumnae Chapter is pleased to announce the Delta G.E.M.S. mentoring program for young women between the ages of 14-18 for the 2007-2008 year. Eligible applicants must be in high school, fill out an application and submit a personal statement.

 

Delta G.E.M.S.-Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully- is a national program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It is a mentoring program for at-risk young women between the ages of 14-18 that is founded on the Sorority's 3 principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. The main objectives of the Mentors are to encourage, develop, and support young women to achieve their maximum potential. The overall goal of the program is to create compassionate, caring and community service minded young women. Mentees are expected to be underserved teens, who are in financial need, but are in good standing in school. Mentors are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Boston Alumnae Chapter.

 

Major Tenets of the Delta G.E.M.S Program

 Service (Community Service Learning )

 Strength "IMARA" (Physical and Mental Strength, Stability and Perserverance)

 Sisterhood (Relationships, Choices & Health)

 Scholarship (Academic Success, College Exposure, Career Exploration & Leadership)

 Show me the Money (Financial Fortitude)

Additionally, the Mentees and Mentors will be working together to create an end of the year celebration/fundraiser utilizing the skills learned in the event planning and stepping which will be offered during the program year.

 

Mentee Expectation :

Mentees are expected to attend one Saturday Training session a month for 4 hours and social/educational gatherings a few times a year. All Mentees are required to attend an interview, the orientation and the opening ceremony. Applicants will be interviewed in early November on a rolling basis. It is expected that participants will make a commitment to the program. Commitment is key!
