Leaders through Education, Action and Hope (LEAH) is Accepting Applications

LEAH is now accepting applications for the '07-'08 School Year. The project is a collaboration between Urban Ecology Institute and the Boston Public Schools’ Bridging the Gap program that seeks to cultivate the educators and community innovators of the future by providing high school students with leadership and mentoring opportunities in out-of-school time programs. In addition to comprehensive training, LEAH mentors are placed in paid internships in youth-serving organizations where they can both learn and contribute.

Attached is an information sheet that explains more about the program. The application for the program is also attached. Please note: all students are welcome to apply, but preference will be given to BPS 10th &11th graders who have participated in the Urban Ecology Institute Courses or who are a part of the TEACHBoston Program.

The LEAH staff is available to come and make presentations to groups of students. Contact Rachel Green with any questions you or the young people you work with may have.

Program Manager YouthBuild Boston

Project Manager

YouthBuild Boston is seeking a competent and compassionate Project Manager for our Project Advantage program. This program provides disadvantaged youth in Boston with opportunities to further their education and participate in career exploration. The goal is to create an environment that enables low income youth to develop skills, build self-esteem, serve their communities, and explore careers related to landscaping, horticulture, and the building industries. Though the Project Advantage program is well established, it has recently been redesigned, making landscaping the primary focus of the vocational education. For this reason, it is important that the Project Manager not only be able to provide expert training in landscaping, horticulture, and carpentry, but this person must be an organized and meticulous self-starter. The ideal candidate for this person has experience in urban education, deep respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults, and the patience and persistence necessary to support and motivate these students.

Responsibilities:
• Train students of varied backgrounds, academic levels, and social development in the field of landscaping, horticulture, and carpentry
• Manage safety on site in accordance with OSHA standards
• Develop creative and challenging activities and curricula that addresses each student’s individual needs while also furthering the momentum/impact of the program in general
• Monitor, assess, and record student progress in accord with program requirements
• Work cooperatively with construction and case management staff to review progress, modify curriculum, and develop a list of materials according to the needs of the students and the program
• Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings
• Maintain communication with students, case managers, parents, and community agencies to support the student’s growth
• Inspire and motivate youth, building their self-esteem while assisting them in the development of marketable skills.
• Coordinate and manage the work of any volunteer projects that Project Advantage participates in

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree and supplemental education in landscaping design or related field
• Minimum of 2 years experience in landscaping and professional experience as a carpenter
• Commitment to challenging young people to succeed through an innovative program that strives to nurture leadership skills and empower trainees to make a difference in their communities
• Excellent communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively as an active member of a team
• Demonstrated experience project coordination and design
