November 18, 2011 — Crittenton Women’s Union, a Boston-based nonprofit that helps low-income women attain economic independence, announced that it raised more than $225,000 at its fifth anniversary gala, the first such event it has held, surpassing its goal by more than 12%.

Crittenton Women’s Union (CWU) had aimed to raise $200,000 at the event, which drew 300 attendees, held earlier this month at studies of WGBH to showcase its accomplishments of the last five years.

Two Roxbury teens and another from Brockton were recently surprised with $5,000 scholarships from a financial services firm at a ceremony in the State House, where three youth-oriented nonprofits were also awarded with $50,000 grants.

Speak up for education, workforce and youth development in the federal budget. Given the volatile discussions about the federal budget, there are many different scenarios for how the budget will come out--both for fy 11 and 12--most of them involve cuts to programs that contribute to dropout prevention and recovery. For example, the High school Graduation Initiative grant just awarded our state is in danger and so are workforce and community development funds. Please contact your House reps and senators to weigh in!

Hundreds of youth rally to demand increased funding for youth jobs programs

BOSTON -- Hundreds of young people converged on Beacon Hill Thursday to demand that funds for youth jobs programs in Massachusetts be kept intact despite the state's budget problems.

Members of the Youth Jobs Coalition called on the Massachusetts Legislature to include money for summer jobs programs in a supplemental budget for the fiscal year ending July 1, and to support Gov. Deval Patrick's request for $8.4 million for the next fiscal year.
